119th Congress
Rosa María Carranza leaned forward to hold a 3-year-old’s back as the girl climbed a rock in the forested hills of northeast Oakland.
Dressed in hiking gear and beaded necklaces, Carranza, 67, maneuvered between trees and children on a sunny morning in December. “Hold on to that branch,” she said in Spanish. “You can do it, my love!”
I came to Congress because my life has been shaped by the systems that either work or fail, with real consequences. I was born legally blind and have never driven a car. Public transit has always been the backbone of my life. The need and fight for accessible transportation inspired me to run for the Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) Board of Directors, where I served on the board and later as president for four years.

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congresswoman Lateefah Simon (D-CA-12) joined Congressman Greg Casar (D-TX-35) and Senator Bernie Sanders (I-VT) in introducing the Home Team Act, which would require owners of professional sports teams to give local communities the chance to buy teams before relocating them. In recent years, Oakland has watched its beloved sports teams leave one after another, leaving a gap in the city’s community identity and economy.
Congresswoman Lateefah Simon has submitted funding requests for important community projects in California’s 12th Congressional District to the House Appropriations Committee.
Under guidelines issued by the Committee, each Representative may request funding for projects in their community for fiscal year 2027 – although only a handful may actually be funded. Projects are restricted to a limited number of federal funding streams, and only state and local governments and eligible non-profit entities are permitted to receive funding.
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, Congresswoman Lateefah Simon (D-CA-12) announced her new legislation, the Same-Day Paratransit Innovation Act. This legislation would incentivize the use of same-day paratransit technology at public transit agencies to allow for more flexible, on-demand paratransit services for individuals with disabilities and other paratransit users who cannot use fixed-route public transit.
