Congresswoman Simon Hosts Roundtable with Local Labor Unions to Discuss the Devastating Impacts of the Trump Administration’s Cuts to Medicaid; Roundtable with Local Chambers of Congress and Small Business Leaders; and Town Hall in Oakland

OAKLAND, CA – Last week, Congresswoman Lateefah Simon (D-CA-12) held multiple engagements in California’s 12th Congressional District to highlight her work in Congress, expose the real impacts of the Trump Administration’s proposed cuts to Medicaid, and lift up small businesses in the East Bay.

On Tuesday, March 18, Congresswoman Simon hosted a roundtable discussion on the devastating potential impacts of the Trump Administration’s cuts to Medicaid, with leaders and frontline health care providers from SEIU Local 2015, SEIU United Healthcare Workers West (SEIU-UHW), and SEIU Local 1021.

Roundtable participants discussed how cuts to Medicaid will jeopardize health care for over a hundred thousand people in CA-12.  Participants also discussed the hidden costs of cuts to Medicaid, including potential hospital closures, longer wait times for patients, job losses, and higher costs across the board for states, hospitals, and health systems.

At the roundtable, Congresswoman Simon said: “If half of the folks in this district of seven cities…are Medicaid and Medicare recipients and you cut that–you’re also cutting the reimbursement structure that creates this whole infrastructure…so even folks like your parents [who have insurance] or my husband who had medical insurance…it takes away opportunities for them if medical institutions are half plus funded, when they are cut, even the middle class will suffer…there will be less.”

On Wednesday, March 19, Congresswoman Simon hosted a roundtable discussion with leaders from local chambers of commerce and other small business stakeholders.

At the roundtable, participants discussed the current state of small business financing, challenges impacting small businesses and financial institutions including public safety and language barriers, and potential solutions for revitalizing and incentivizing small businesses in the East Bay.

As a Member of the Small Business Committee in the House of Representatives, Congresswoman Simon is committed to supporting small businesses in the East Bay and ensuring they have the resources they need to succeed.

On Friday, March 21, Congresswoman Simon hosted a townhall at Oakland High School, with hundreds of constituents in attendance, to cover her work in Congress to deliver resources for CA-12 and fight the Trump Administration’s harmful agenda. You can watch the full recording of the town hall here.
