House Republicans Reject Congresswoman Simon's Amendment to Protect Americans' Access to Medicaid, Medicare, Social Security, the Affordable Care Act and SNAP
Congresswoman Simon’s Amendment to H.R. 1295 would have protected critical benefits from further attacks by the Trump Administration
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, in the House Oversight Committee, Republicans blocked Congresswoman Simon’s (D-CA-12) amendment to protect Americans’ access to Medicaid, Medicare, Social Security, health care under the Affordable Care Act (ACA), and the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP).
Congresswoman Simon’s amendment would have amended H.R. 1295, the Reorganizing Government Act of 2025, by prohibiting the Trump Administration from reducing any benefit provided or administered by the Social Security Administration, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, the Food and Nutrition Service at the Department of Agriculture, and the Affordable Care Act.
Congresswoman Simon opposed H.R. 1295, legislation which would give the President authority through 2026 to propose sweeping reorganizational changes to the executive branch and effectively expedite the President’s ability to reduce executive departments and agencies.
Of the amendment, Congresswoman Simon said:
“My amendment would have prohibited the Administration from gutting benefits provided or administered by federal agencies overseeing Medicaid, Medicare, Social Security, the ACA, and SNAP – but House Republicans unanimously voted against protecting these benefits and protecting Americans. Their abdication of their Congressional power and of their responsibility to serve their constituents is sickening.
“After my husband passed away from cancer, Social Security survivor benefits were a lifeline for my family. I know personally the importance of programs like Social Security and SNAP. I promised my constituents that I would do everything in my power to protect our democracy and the social safety net, and while Republicans have blocked this attempt – I will continue to find pathways forward to deliver for CA-12 constituents and Americans.”
While Congresswoman Simon opposes the merits of H.R. 1295, the Reorganizing Government Act, she offered this amendment to ensure that the President cannot carry out further attacks to Medicaid, Medicare, Social Security, and SNAP. Unfortunately, House Republicans rejected this commonsense amendment to put their party over their country.
