Congresswoman Lateefah Simon Hosts Eleven Town Halls in First Year of Congress, Reaching Thousands Across the East Bay
Oakland, CA – Since being sworn into the House of Representatives in January 2025, Congresswoman Lateefah Simon (D-CA-12) has held eleven town halls, reaching more than 15,000 constituents. The Congresswoman traveled across California’s 12th Congressional District, holding town halls in all seven cities she represents — Oakland, Berkeley, Alameda, Emeryville, Piedmont, Albany and San Leandro. She also held virtual Zoom and telephone town halls for those who could not make it in person.
“My primary focus since Day 1 has been to represent and fight for the diverse communities across my district,” said Congresswoman Lateefah Simon. “Many of my constituents are deeply concerned about the cruel threats to our democracy, the Constitution, and their livelihoods. I am incredibly focused on ensuring my constituents have the information and resources they need, holding the Trump Administration accountable, and listening to all the communities across my congressional district. Tyranny is the rule of the fearful few, but democracy is the work of the faithful many.
“Though this year has brought challenges for many, every single day our district produces change and beauty. Murals rise, music and small businesses are born, community organizations bring us together, and young people claim their rightful place in shaping what comes next. This resilience and joy inspires me every day, and I feel so fortunate to represent our beautiful district. I look forward to meeting with and hearing from more neighbors at town halls in 2026.”
Town hall topics included: (1) the Congresswoman’s legislative work in Congress during her first year, including her work to hold the Trump Administration accountable as a member of the House Oversight Committee and the bills she has introduced to support small businesses, workers with disabilities, and LGBTQI+ youth; (2) the Congresswoman’s work to protect Social Security, Medicaid, the Department of Education, and other vital programs Californians depend on; (3) resources following the Republican federal funding freeze in February 2025 and during the Republican government shutdown in October 2025; (4) attacks on immigrant communities, constitutional and legal rights, and American civil liberties; and (5) how Californians can stay involved and continue to fight back.
Congresswoman Simon brings the stories and feedback from Californians back to Washington, D.C. to implement into her work in Congress including on the House Oversight Committee and the Small Business Committee.
