Congresswoman Simon Statement on Bay Area Immigration Enforcement Surge

October 23, 2025

Oakland, CA. – Congresswoman Lateefah Simon (D-CA-12) released the below statement following  reportsthat the Trump Administration dispatched more than 100 federal agents to the U.S. Coast Guard Base in Alameda on Wednesday October 23, 2025 and reports of Custom and Border Patrol agents arriving to the Base:

“The militarization of our cities and terrorization of immigrant communities does nothing to advance public safety. From D.C. to Chicago to LA, it is abundantly clear that the Trump Administration’s goal is to sow fear, purposefully create situations of uncertainty and chaos, and needlessly traumatize immigrant communities.

“I am working closely with local elected officials and other leaders in our district to monitor the situation at the Coast Guard Base Alameda in my district and ensure that community members have the information and resources they need. Everyone, regardless of their immigration status, is entitled to due process as guaranteed by the 5th Amendment.

“While Trump and Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem have called off federal deployments in San Francisco, we remain prepared for any scenario. Actions speak louder than words, and the long-term safety of our immigrant communities is top of mind for me. The Bay Area has long been at the center of social movements and peaceful protest, and this moment is no different. We know true safety comes from mobilizing resources and partnership, not from intimidation or militarization. If we are serious about building community safety and saving lives, we must commit fully to building opportunity and preventing violence before it happens. That is the path to peace that lasts.”

Congresswoman Simon’s office provides immigration casework assistance for constituents and has Know Your Rights resources for individuals and small businesses. Community members in Alameda County who witness ICE actions or know someone who has been detained by ICE can utilize the Alameda County Immigration Legal Education Partnership (ACILEP) immigration rapid response network. In Congress, Congresswoman Simon is a co-sponsor of the Stop ICE from Kidnapping U.S. Citizens Act, the No Secret Police Act, the Access to Counsel Act, and more.
